Barend Botha grew up in Musina, South Africa, where golf wasn’t just a pastime, it was the thread that tied weekends together. He and his brother played religiously with their dad, turning every round into a competition, every chip into a chance to win something. What started as a family tradition quickly took root as something more.

Barend became obsessed with the rhythm of the game, the way it challenges your head as much as your hands. By the time he reached the professional level, that childhood spark had been shaped by hours of quiet work, hard lessons, and the kind of discipline you don’t learn overnight.

He plays with purpose and carries himself with confidence. Barend represents a new kind of player. Thoughtful, focused, and grounded in something real. He’s the future of golf, but in a way that nods to everything the game has always stood for.

Where did you grow up, and what first drew you to the game of golf?
I grew up in Musina, Limpopo, South Africa. Golf was something my brother and I used to do with our dad on the weekends. We’d compete at everything, even putting and chipping games. That competitive side gave me the itch to keep coming back.

What’s one lesson golf has taught you that sticks with you off the course?
Never be too hard on yourself. Give your best, believe in what you can do, and always stay positive, grateful, and respectful.

How has your game evolved since turning professional?
I’ve learned to be more strategic and mentally strong. That’s what separates the good from the great.

What’s the biggest difference between amateur and pro-level golf?
Discipline. And mental strength. At this level, those two things are everything.

What’s a typical day in your training schedule right now?
About four hours of practice. I start with stretches and a warm-up, then two hours on the range working through drills. After that, it’s short game—chipping, putting, and finishing drills with my caddy.

Favorite course you’ve played so far? Bucket list course?
Kingsbarns in Scotland. Bucket list? Augusta National.

What part of your game are you most focused on right now?
Long irons and putting.

Any pre-round rituals?
Not really. Just routine and focus.

What’s your go-to look on the course?
Comfortable, clean, and sharp.

What do you like about Ashworth’s approach to golf style?

Something competitive. I love pushing myself.

One piece of advice you'd give to junior golfers coming up behind you?

Believe in yourself. Stay focused. And enjoy the ride.
